Election Countdown: 4 Days

Need a reason to vote? It's simple, really.

Working people, whether we're teachers or firefighters, grocery clerks or bricklayers, need a seat at thetable if we're going to be able to put food on the table for our families. Our seat at the table comes from making our voices heard on Election Day.

This year's election will have a direct impact on our jobs, schools, families and future.

We need to make sure every worker in California understands the stakes this election.

Elections are Won by Those Who Show Up to Vote!

Or perhaps more accurately by those who can turn out their side. You can be sure that the pro-charter, anti-public school forces will be at the polls on election day in our district. According to the San Jose Mercury, California Charter School Association Advocates reported $185,000 in independent campaign spending for Hover-Smoot and four candidates seeking seats on the Morgan Hill School Board. (10/30) We have two choices: let them win, and their candidates take control of our district and the County Board of Education, OR make our voices heard before and on election day. What can you do?

  1. Make sure you vote yourself! Go to the link below for a list of labor-endorsed candidates.
Find the local and state labor-endorsed candidates who are committed to supporting working families.
  2. Remind your family, friends, and neighbors to vote as well. Help them to understand that
this election is critical to our local schools (and we're not even asking them to pass a bond).
  3. Help campaign this weekend for our endorsed candidates:
    • Claudia Rossi for County Board
    • Donna Foster-Ruebusch, Ron Woolf, David Gerard, & Stephen Klem for MHUSD Board

The campaign for State Superintendent of Schools is also very important to us, and there are some misleading ads out there that may result in Marshall Tuck (another charter advocate - and remember, we are not talking about the Morgan Hill Charter School variety of charters here) taking command of the State Department of Education. Check out his record if you are in the mood for a Halloween fright! The Federation endorses Tom Torlakson for State Superintendent.

If you are not sure how to talk to people about the Torlakson v. Tuck race, please check out this video. (It's good, and worth a few minutes of your time - though it is blocked at school, so you'll have to watch it at home.)

Remember to Check Your Pay Stubs

As payday is approaching, please remember to check your paystub for accuracy. And hold onto your health and welfare sign-up sheet, so that you can check your January paystub against the changes you authorized.

Have a safe and happy Halloween with your family, friends, and students!
