Wednesday, October 15 County Board Meeting Matters!
This is a final reminder that the Voices and Navigator county appeals will be heard at the SCCOE board meeting (1290 Ridder Park Dr., San Jose CA 95131), Wednesday, October 15 at 5:00 p.m.
There will be no closed session and the appeals are the first two items.
We will have Chipotle burritos, bottled waters, and sweet treats served in the parking lot from 4:00-5:00 p.m for all MHUSD supporters.
We need all sites represented, and if you aren't sure that you make the difference, read the article written by Gemma Abels below. See you there!
Why You Matter
By Gemma Abels, Vice-President
This will be a historic month for the Morgan Hill Unified School District; it will determine the direction of our schools. Last year we proved that a local school district (teachers, administration, classified staff, parents, school board) could stand up for a comprehensive public education for all students. Not only did our school board live up to their responsibility of providing only excellent education choices for our students, we were able to convince a charter friendly county board to uphold their decision. Other districts and boards were inspired by our efforts, but charter schools and their supporters also took notice of our strong commitment to local neighborhood public schools.
The California Charter School Association (CCSA) is supporting VOICES and Navigator's petitions to open charter schools in 2015 -- 2016. As of October 11, 2014, CCSA has spent almost $15,000 to support their endorsed local school board candidates. They have spent almost $50,000 to support Julia Hover Smoot's re-election to the Santa Clara County School Board. At the charter school meetings, MHUSD is often portrayed as the monolithic school district and teachers' union blocking change wanted by Hispanic parents. In fact, you have to know that we are fighting a charter industry whose student numbers and profit margins grow exponentially every year.
The county vote, the county school board race, and the local school board race are all winnable. We often talk about OUR community, OUR district, OUR schools, and OUR students; this has to be OUR FIGHT! You have many opportunities to be a part of OUR efforts:
